On March 18, 2021, the Environmental Committee of Pulheim approved a proposal by Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, SPD, and BVP to implement the European Energy Award (eea), an energy and climate protection management system. This decision aims to systematically advance climate protection measures in Pulheim.

Björn Leschny, a representative of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, expressed his satisfaction with the committee’s decision, stating, “This is a good day for climate protection in Pulheim!”

The eea system, utilized by numerous municipalities committed to climate protection, is a software-supported framework guided by experts to enhance the sustainability of communities concerning environmental and climate initiatives. Its adoption in Pulheim is intended to ensure the effective implementation of the Integrated Climate Protection Concept (IKKP), which was established in 2017.

An analysis by the Green Party’s environmental team revealed that less than 20% of the 34 measures outlined in the IKKP had been realized, despite the plan’s target completion by the end of 2022. At the current pace, it would take Pulheim an additional 13 years to fully implement the IKKP.

Birgit Liste-Partsch of the Bürgerverein Pulheim emphasized the necessity for the administration to address staffing shortages to facilitate the execution of these climate protection measures.

The final adoption of the eea system requires approval from the Pulheim City Council in its forthcoming session. Proponents remain optimistic, noting that the main and finance committee had previously delegated the matter to the environmental committee for specialized evaluation, which has now rendered a favorable preliminary decision.
